Choosing an energy-efficient washing machine
When it comes to upgrading your laundry setup, choosing an energy-efficient washing machine is a smart decision for your home, your wallet, and the environment. At Guernsey Electricity, we offer a wide selection of models packed with innovative features that make washing easier, faster, and more sustainable.
Key features to look for:
1. Energy Ratings
Most models on our site carry an A energy rating, the highest available under current UK/EU standards. This means:
-
Lower electricity consumption
-
Reduced carbon footprint
-
Long-term savings on utility bills
2. Steam Hygiene & Steam Refresh
Many machines now include steam cycles that:
-
Kill up to 99.9% of bacteria and allergens
-
Reduce wrinkles and odours
-
Freshen clothes without a full wash
Perfect for households with children, pets, or sensitive skin.
3. Load Sensing & Water Optimization
Advanced sensors automatically adjust water and energy usage based on the size and type of load. Benefits include:
-
Less wasted water
-
Efficient detergent use
-
Better care for delicate fabrics
4. Inverter Motors
These motors are quieter, more durable, and more energy-efficient than traditional ones. They:
-
Reduce vibration and noise
-
Extend the lifespan of the machine
-
Use less power during operation
5. Eco Modes & Cold Wash Technology
Eco settings allow you to wash at lower temperatures without compromising results. Cold wash cycles:
-
Save energy by avoiding heating water
-
Preserve fabric colours and textures
-
Work well with modern detergents
6. Large Drum Capacities
With options ranging from 9kg to 10kg, you can wash more in fewer loads—saving time, water, and energy.
Note that not all programmes will deliver the maximum energy efficiency. Sometimes this is limited to only one or two available programmes. For example, you could purchase an “A-rated” washing machine, but if you choose the Quick Wash option (which will offer a full wash in only 30 or 45 minutes), then your machine is going to use substantially more energy, for instance by having to quickly heat the water to temperature. You should always refer to the operating instructions for your machine for details on the choice of programmes, and which would provide the best energy efficiency.
